First webinar scheduled with important insights between protocols, origins, and success of OTT.

The first of three seminars signed by HD Forum Italia and aimed at discovering the meaning of OTT (Over the Top) in all its technical facets, the event entitled “HDFI Talks about Innovation: introduction to OTT,” thanks to the interventions of the experts of the most authoritative Italian Forum in the sector, recounted the origins, keys to success, protocols and founding elements of OTT, with in-depth studies dedicated to the protection and distribution of content.
A first appointment underscored by the words of HDFI President Benito Manlio Mari: “We celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Association also through this initiative. A path, ours, made hand in hand with the members, in parallel with the evolution of Italian TV. Since 2006 we have had important representatives who have been able to give voice to the entire supply chain, in a progression that today sees us as the most important trade association. From the world of broadcasters to media companies to the industry to institutions, passing through system integrators and the panorama of connection providers: all our actors cooperate here with the common goal of maturation and development, harmonization of international standards.”

As part of the webinar (HERE is the recording), conducted by Giovanni Venuti of HDFI, which shed light on the roots of OTT, also the intervention of Diego Gibellino (TIM) on the topic of ABR protocols, and Stefano Bossi of Mediaset on the elements of OTT. Finally, with Roberto Borroni of Nagra, space was given to the introduction to the topic of OTT Content Protection, while with Daniele Rascio (Rai) focus on OTT Content distribution.

The second webinar focuses on the role of CDNs and on scalability and latency.

A new event in the HDFI webinar calendar, this time on the topics of scalability and latency in the OTT environment.
The central theme, which will also be driving the Association’s 15th-anniversary annual conference in the fall, delved into the role and architecture of CDNs with related economics on this occasion.
In addition, also an in-depth look at the mobile side, innovative use of multicast for OTT, and low-latency solutions.
After the introduction and greetings by the President of HD Forum Italia, Benito Manlio Mari, moderator Giovanni Venuti introduced some distinguished guests from the industry, such as Luca Moglia from Akamai, on the topic of CDN Edge Strategy, Mariano Aliano from Mediaset who deepened the topic with a speech entitled “CDN from the Bcasters’ perspective.” To close the seminar Diego Gibellino of TIM on “Multicast for OTT,” Vittoria Mignone (Rai) on the “mobile” side that the story of “scalability,” and Stefano Bossi (Mediaset) on the topic of latency.

The digital terrestrial switch-off has officially slipped.
Following consultation between MISE and the various representatives of the TV world, the mandatory switch-off of MPEG-2 encoding in favor of MPEG-4 on DVB-T standard, originally scheduled for the now imminent September 1, 2021, will be postponed, as will the mandatory switchover to the new DVB-T2 transmission standard, which was planned for June 30, 2022.
The new dates will be set by the MISE with subsequent measures, also based on the monitoring of the replacement rate of the installed receiver fleet, a rate that should have an acceleration thanks to the recent decree that recognizes a €100 bonus, without income limits, for the purchase of a new TV, having scrapped an obsolete one.
The voluntary switchover to MPEG-4 encoding announced by the major broadcasters for some of their networks as of mid-October 2021 will surely also go in the same direction.
On the other hand, the handover of the 700 MHz band to mobile telephony, scheduled for July 1, 2022, remains confirmed.

HD Forum Italia President Benito Manlio Mari recalled the important contribution made by the Association during the whole process of profiling the requirements for television receivers collected in the UHD Book. HDFI has always looked at the specification with balanced anticipation and harmonizing sharing among the actors of the TV supply chain, represented by the industry and Italian broadcasters.
